Recycling Visit

On Tuesday, 28th of April, the Derbyshire Dales District Council Recycling Team visited us to provide an insightful look into environmental sustainability and the mechanics of waste management.

The session began with an explanation of global warming and the greenhouse effect, illustrating how excess CO₂ and methane trap heat in our atmosphere. To combat this, the team highlighted practical steps we can take, such as reducing single-use plastics, composting, and ensuring we “wash and squash” our recyclables to save space and prevent contamination.

A key focus of the talk was the circular economy. Unlike the traditional “take-make-waste” model, a circular economy aims to keep materials in use for as long as possible through recycling, repairing, and repurposing, effectively turning waste back into a resource.
The highlight of the visit was a live demonstration of the recycling lorry. We were given a rare look inside the vehicle to see how household waste is compressed and sorted. The team demonstrated how the lorry uses specialised compartments and hydraulic systems to keep different materials separate and managed efficiently before they reach the processing plant.
Thank you DDDC Recycling Team for a wonderful  morning!
