Class 1
Earlier this term in our science lessons we were investigating different ways in which plants disperse their seeds which we revisited for stem day. Everyone had a small pot of seeds (mung beans) and their challenge was to create a seed pod which would disperse their seeds as effectively as possible. The children chose many different methods for this including floating, spring loaded opening, getting caught on animal fur and wind dispersal.
We then tested their designs to see how far and how many seeds were dispersed from their seed pod.
In our second session I introduced Microbits. This was particularly challenging for the children, especially for those who had not used desktop computers and a mouse previously. We used a computer programme called MakeCode to build on their previous knowledge and experience of using block coding to generate algorithms which were then downloaded to the microbit to create a flashing picture designed by them.
Class 2 Theme: Launching projectiles!
In our first session we designed and built pop cannons from cardboard tubes and elastic bands. We then had a tournament outside with various targets!
In our second session the children designed and built a vehicle with an attached simple trebuchet. We then had a contest to see whose vehicle travelled the furthest with one push and how far their projectile (a small pom pom!) could be launched!
Lots of fun using simple everyday materials!
