First Aid – Friday 4th March 2016.

A representative from St John’s Ambulance came to show all of our children how to help someone needing first aid. We had lots of fun learning the vital steps to helping someone who needs first aid.

Firstly, we learnt about the Primary Survey using DR ABC.

D stands for danger – check it is safe to approach the casualty and if not go for help.

R is response – is the casualty able to speak to you? tap them on the shoulder and talk to them.

A – airway – is their airway open and clear? Tip their head back to open it and help them if necessary.

B – is their breathing normal? If not, help them.

C – circulation – are there any signs of bleeding? Stop them if possible.

When you have dealt with these, we learnt how to put the casualty into the recovery position. Everyone worked with a partner to practice. We were surprised how easily you could turn them over into the position even if they were a grown-up.

We learnt how to apply a bandage to stop bleeding. Then one of the younger pupils modeled how to stop a nosebleed – They were really good at following the instructions. Throughout the school, everyone worked really hard and learnt a lot, it was excellent training that we realised would be really useful.
