STEM Day

The STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) days are always great fun and this one was no exception.

Mrs Plevey and Dave Lyford (Lego Dave) split the pupils across the morning and afternoon in their key stages and the sessions are geared to challenge and inspire the children to learn through having fun together!

KS2 – Mrs Plevey – Session 1

Using the AI Face Sensing extension in Scratch, the Juniors learnt how to create interactive digital costumes that respond to facial landmarks in real time. With Scratch Face Sensing blocks, they created interactive projects that use the features of their face! They used the AI-powered extension on Scratch to detect if it saw their face and where a nose, eyes, ears, mouth were. They then use the blocks to control game characters with a face tilt, creating face filters, interacting with informational projects, and more!

KS2 Session 2

We took photos of all the Christmas decorations around the school and then edited them.

We then used tiny versions of each photo to make our own Christmas tree collage!

KS1 Session 1

Mrs Plevey helped the infants created Andy Warhol’s “Marilyn Monroe” style pictures using their own picture and then the Befunky App to change the effects of one photo to create a collage.

KS1 Session 2

In the afternoon session KS1 had a digital Scavenger Hunt to create.  We took a very close up photo of an item in the room and then far away photos of items around the room.  We then had a competition to see if we could guess what the close-up picture was and revealed the answer with the far away picture!

Here are some of the close up photos (Answers at the bottom of this post!)

Lego Dave spent the day overseeing the Lego Coding robotic sessions.

The idea was for the children to explore using the 9-segment colour display firstly creating a hand-held torch light provided by 9 segment display.

We then moved on to using coding software to code the light to display different patterns and images from the torch and even making the torch switch on when it senses being picked up!

KS2 pupils then worked together to join 9-segment displays together to make bigger image or moving pattern added in time displays.
