Class 1 – RE

Which people are special and why?

This half term the children in class 1 have been thinking about who is special and why. We began by thinking about who is special to us in our lives. There were many suggestions including parents, grandparents, siblings, friends and teachers. We then interviewed a special person we know – Katie Kitchen. The children enjoyed the opportunity to see Katie outside of lunchtime and were very excited that she could be a part of our R.E. lesson. We all agreed she was a very special person in school as without dinner we would run out of energy to get through the day!

This then led to us listening to an interview of people with faith. We recalled what we had heard from this interview and thought about some of the symbols they had talked about that were special in Christianity and Judaism and why. We used artwork to record these viewpoints.

This led us to focus on the story of Jairus and his daughter from the New Testament in the bible. We learnt about how Jesus showed care and kindness to Jairus to heal his daughter and make her well again. Friendship bracelets were made and we each exchanged these with someone in the class. Every child left school that day with a bracelet from a friend.

We followed this by reading the story of the wind and the moon from the Buddhist faith. The children were interested that this story was from a faith we were less familiar with. Again, it explored the value of friendship and what can happen during times of conflict and how these can be resolved. The children were able to annotate pictures from this story to show their recall whilst our youngest members enjoyed acting the story out.
