Tree Planting

Gardening Club- Planting a hedgerow

The Woodland Trust have gifted to the school 30 saplings to form a hedgerow. The children worked in their 3 house teams. The project was in three parts;  Firstly there was a discussion about the environmental importance of hedges, how to plant and care for them. This was held during lunchtime at Gardening club. The second part involved Class 2, who were tasked with the task of measuring the chosen area then formulating a plan for  the planting of the trees. Class 2 teacher Mrs Wildgoose used the opportunity to apply the children’s mathematical skills and understanding to produce drawings which then were referred to during the planting of the hedgerow.

The final part took place on Friday 24th November in glorious winter sunshine where each house team took it in turns to plant 10 saplings. This involved each child  having their own  role to play. The house captain dug the hole, another child planted the sapling, the next child placed the supporting cane into the hole beside the sapling whilst another child placed the protective sleeve over the sapling. Then finally a firm foot was used to press the turf back into place. The children will now take care of their part of our hedgerow helping to leave a legacy for the school as well as wildlife.
