It’s a small world… In Hartington

Residents in the village are working together to host a Christmas tree event during the festive season to commemorate Christmas around the world.

Children from Hartington C of E Primary School have put the final touches to a display to coincide with the project.

They have painted pictures of children wearing traditional outfits from countries including Spain, Iceland, Russia, North Korea, Germany, Ukraine and Scotland, alongside portraits of themselves.

The children spent time researching different areas of the world and the beliefs and customs of people who lived there. They looked into time-honoured clothing and were inspired to paint their own pictures illustrating items like saris in India; fur and animal skins in the Polar Regions; traditional dresses for Norway and Italy, and skirts and jewellery in Africa.

Head Teacher, Tracy Blackwell said: “This activity has been a real eye-opener for children and they have learnt so much about the different cultures and the traditions of Christmas all over the world.

“The paintings that they have created are absolutely fantastic – really capturing the essence of each country and ways of life. I would urge everyone to drop into the Village Hall to soak up the festive atmosphere and enjoy the children’s vibrant displays alongside the beautifully decorated Christmas trees.”

The Christmas tree festival is an annual tradition in Hartington and this year sees a celebration of trees from all over the world. It is set to be officially opened during the village’s Christmas tree lights switch-on, on Saturday 12 December.

Residents and visitors are welcome to join festivities from 12noon on the day, including a vintage tractor run, carol singing, the switch-on from 5pm and the exhibition opening in the Village Hall from 5.30pm to 7pm.

The showcase will be open from 11am to 4pm on Sunday 13 December and again from 2pm to 4pm on Friday 18 December. It is free admission to all events but donations towards the Village Hall are very much welcome.
