It was only the second week back in school after the New Year and the first week back after the weather event of Storm Goretti when the children and staff experienced a full day of having no electricity throughout the school.<\/p>\n

Everyone transferred the lessons into the hall which was the lightest and the warmest room within the school. The children took everything in their stride throughout the day as the temperature dropped, from having a packed lunch, to painting, reading, completing number tasks and playing games. Just as everyone was leaving the lights flickered and the electricity came back on to a multitude of cheers.<\/p>\n

The following day the year 2 and 3 children in class 1 were learning about Haiku poems which are written in a pattern using the syllables from each word to make a three lined verse of five, seven and five syllables. The children made the decision to write a short, collaborative poem about the power-cut:<\/p>\n

It was dark and cold,<\/span><\/p>\n

The hall was the lightest place,<\/span><\/p>\n

We ate sandwiches!<\/span><\/p>\n

We enjoyed painting,<\/span><\/p>\n

It was warmer out than in,<\/span><\/p>\n

We did not give up!<\/span><\/p>\n

It was not much fun,<\/span><\/p>\n

We played games to keep us warm.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lights came on at last!<\/span><\/p>\n

The younger year 1 and early years children wrote their collaborative piece of writing in the style of a winter acrostic poem based on Storm Goretti, which can be read both from left to right and top to bottom.<\/p>\n

I<\/span> wear a woolly hat, a scarf and gloves to keep warm.<\/span><\/p>\n

N<\/span>o leaves on the trees.<\/span><\/p>\n

T<\/span>he farmers keep animals in the barn to keep them warm.<\/span><\/p>\n

E<\/span>njoy playing snowball fights with my dad.<\/span><\/p>\n

R<\/span>eady to build a snowman.<\/span><\/p>\n
